Palmer tips Everton to beat Chelsea to top six finish – Will Silva’s side top the Blues?

Everton have been tipped to replace Chelsea in the top six this season, with former England international Carlton Palmer claiming Frank Lampard’s men aren’t at the same level.

It has been a while since the Toffees placed above the Stamford Bridge club, with the 1995/96 season the last time it happened, in what was Everton’s only top half finish in the Premier League’s first decade.

However, Palmer believes it will happen again this season, with the transfer embargo-hit Chelses squad not good enough to challenge for the Champions League, according to Palmer.

Talking to Stadium Astro, Palmer said:

In the top league I’ve got Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton and Arsenal.

I don’t see Chelsea touching any of them.

They’re in a league with Wolves, Leicester, Watford, Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Ham.

So Chelsea are in that second tier.

If the remit from the club is to develop the youth, then finishing eighth would be a great job from Frank Lampard.

There’s not a cat in hell’s chance Chelsea will finish in the Champions League spots. I look at them and they’re well short of players. I don’t see it.

It’s difficult to imagine Chelsea reaching those Champions League spots this season, I agree. I was trepidatious about writing them off from the beginning as I thought they might be able to handle themselves, despite their transfer embargo, but early signs aren’t good.

However, plenty of that squad have winning mentalities, and I don’t think they’ll accept falling down that Premier League table. Everton certainly don’t have as many of those same characters, so it remains to be seen whether they can pull through and rise to the occasion and challenge on ability alone.

It’s tough to judge just yet, we need to give it time and see how the club perform against the lesser sides. If we can continue to accumulate points, then the sky could be the limit.
