Delph to miss England call-up – positive news for Everton

Fabian Delph will miss out on an England call-up due to a groin issue, despite having just returned to action for Everton, according to Mail Online.

Everton will face Wolves on Sunday and the Premier League will be on a break afterward, with the September international break taking precedence.

England will face Bulgaria and Kosovo on September 7 and September 10 respectively, with both clubs forming part of the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

Delph started for Everton against Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, playing the full 90 minutes for the Toffees and impressed on his competitive debut for the club.

However, according to Mail Online, Delph will be left out of the squad due to a groin issue. The report claims that Dele Alli and Eric Dier will be left out as they are just returning from injury, but such similar claim has been made about Delph and his return, strangely.

Gareth Southgate could look to call-up a number of new players to make their international debuts in the qualifier fixtures, with Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings rumoured to be on the England manager’s watch list.

While I’m slightly confused about the way in which Mail Online has written their piece concerning Fabian Delph’s injury, with them making it sound like Delph didn’t make his return from injury on Wednesday, I don’t think it is a bad thing that the 29-year old will miss out.

Having just come back from injury, and with Everton struggled for depth in midfield right now after JP Gbamin’s injury lay-off, I’m completely fine with Delph taking the time to bed in and rest up over the international break.

Delph impressed against Lincoln, and frequently made positive forward movement in midfield. Everton will be hoping he can do so again against Wolves, if he is chosen to play, and the added pressure of turning out for England in what should be a pair of routine wins anyway isn’t needed.
