O’Hara slams England decision to re-call Delph over Alli – why he is wrong to do so

O’Hara slams England decision to re-call Delph over Alli – why he is wrong to do so

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara has slammed the decision to re-call Fabian Delph to the England squad.

The Everton midfielder was named on Thursday in Gareth Southgate 25-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Czech Republic, having missed out during the last international break due to injury.

Tottenham star Dele Alli was one of a number of players to miss out, as competition for a place in the Three Lions’ squad is the highest it has been in quite some time.

Delph has quickly established himself as a crucial component of Marco Silva’s side since signing from Manchester City this summer, while Dele Alli’s recovery from a long-running injury has restricted him to just 30 minutes of Premier League action so far in the new campaign.

Despite barely featuring in the league, with Alli having primarily having played in the Carabao Cup and the Champions League for Spurs, O’Hara has slammed Southgate’s decision to include Delph over the former MK Dons man.

Talking on talkSPORT about the decision to leave Alli out for Delph, O’Hara said:

What? Fabian Delph? He doesn’t need to look at Fabian Delph, does he?

For me, I think Gareth should have stuck by him (Alli) and given him the confidence (of putting) him in the squad.

I know he’s out of form but he’s still young and he’s still done a lot for his age.

Ever the pillar of wisdom, Billericay Town’s Jamie O’Hara has come out with the most ludicrous and ridiculous statement here. Essentially, O’Hara believes Alli deserves a spot because he is young, that is what he is saying here.

Dele Alli is a great talent and I have no doubt that should he feature regularly enough for Spurs this season, he will be on the plane in the summer for the European Championships. However, until then Southgate needs to pick his best performing team with the occasional wildcard included to test their ability at that level.

Now Alli isn’t a wildcard, and neither is Delph. With that in mind, Southgate has to pick the better performing player, either the midfielder who has been a shining light in Everton otherwise disappointing start to the season or the playmaker who has played just half an hour of football.

Alli isn’t playing much football, so there is no feasible reason for his inclusion in the squad. O’Hara even accepts Jesse Lingard’s exclusion, citing his poor performances as reason enough, but he’s willing to include someone who is barely playing and when he is playing it is with another side who aren’t performing?

Playing internationally for England has to be a meritocracy. You have to earn an England call-up, not can’t expect to simply recieve one because you’ve had one before and you’re young so you might develop. Delph deserves his spot, and O’Hara’s stance is ridiculous.
