Everton still owe Barcelona money from transfer fees – why it isn’t a big deal

Everton are yet to settle their debts to Barcelona, according to a new report regarding the Spanish club’s finances.

According to a report from AS (via Sport Witness) on Monday Barcelona are still yet to pay a sizeable €260million in transfer fees.

This is in part due to the fact that the Catalan club are themselves owed €75million in unpaid transfer fees, with AS’s report claiming that Everton are a stand out club on that list of debtors.

Everton reportedly still owe more than €25million to be paid over the next few years, with all of Yerry Mina (€9.75million), Lucas Digne (€6.7million) and Andre Gomes (€9.56million) not yet fully paid off.

This is a normal occurrence in football, with it being rare that a club will offer to pay the full amount up front. However, with Barca certain to expect that money sooner rather than later, it’ll be interesting to see how that impacts transfer plans on Merseyside.

Sport Witness suggests that with AS not mentioning specific clauses causing this debt, it is likely that the outstanding figures relate to transfer fees.

I’m sure this is nothing to be concerned about and neither will it impact Everton’s transfer plans, but it is a necessary story to cover. Outstanding fees come part and parcel will big summer spending, particularly for a club of Everton’s stature.

I would assume that any transfer budget for upcoming windows has factored out the money needed to pay outstanding debts, and that any prior commitments won’t stop Silva (or whoever else is in charge by January) from strengthening the playing squad.
