Schalke don’t have permanent option for Kenny – positive for Everton

Schalke do not have the option to sign Jonjoe Kenny permanently in the summer, according to reports.

The 22-year old full-back joined the Gelsenkirchen outfit in the summer on a season-long loan, and has impressed so far in his spell in Germany.

Kenny has been a mainstay in David Wagner’s defence, picking up the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Month award for August and being nominated for the same award in September.

Reports in the summer claimed that Schalke could look to sign Kenny permanently if his loan spell went well, causing some Everton fans to worry that Kenny’s early season form could see him leave permanently ahead of next season.

However, Bild (via TBR) claim that the German club do not have a purchase clause in the Everton defender’s loan agreement.

While Schalke could still try to sign the defender, Everton will be in the more powerful position during negotiations, should they desire to entertain offers for Kenny.

This information is positive for Everton fans because it means that the club will be able to decide upon Kenny’s future themselves in the summer.

It remains to be seen whether Marco Silva (or whoever else is manager down the line) sees Kenny as a long-term option, with Seamus Coleman needing to be slowly fazed out. With Djibril Sidibe having a permanent option, Everton could have three senior right-backs next season.

But this means that for every great performance Kenny turns in, it increases his personal stock and gives Everton better negotiating power, which is never a bad thing.
