There has plenty of debate in recent weeks over Duncan Ferguson’s impact or lack thereof as Everton’s first-team coach.
The Scotsman has been part of the first-team coaching staff since 2014, and at the time many fans were pleased to see a fan favourite return to the club in a senior capacity.
The 47-year old had been working with the Everton academy before that, and it was expected that Ferguson’s wealth of experience and knowledge of the club would allow him to be a vital member of the backroom staff.

Not only that, but Ferguson’s aerial dominance as a former Toffees striker was predicted to help him impart wisdom onto the current crop of forwards, teaching them to be more impactful in the air.
However, Everton’s aerial threat has never been that impressive over the last few years, not since Tim Cahill departed the club in all honesty.
Several fans have been debating on social media what Ferguson actually brings to the club in his coaching role, and whether he is a valuable member of the backroom staff or if he keep his role simply due to sentimentality.

I agree with the sentiment that it is tough to make a judgement call on Ferguson’s future when we don’t actually know what he does. Does he have a say in team selection or tactical arrangements? We have no idea.
However as not much has changed now under several managerial regimes, maybe Ferguson doesn’t make enough of an impact. Either he consistently has no say, in which case he is completely wasted wages, or he has plenty of say, in which he isn’t doing a good enough job.
Either way, it does seem to be a sentimental role, one which is always nice to see when things are going Everton’s way. When they’re not, and fans want change, he finds himself on the chopping block.
I would like to hear more from Ferguson himself to find out what role he has at the club, but until that happens, he is just another former player lost in the shuffle at the club.
