Ex-Everton man Ball has backed Davies to kick on in Gomes’ absence

Former Everton man Michael Ball has backed Tom Davies to kick on at Goodison Park now, particularly in Andre Gomes’ absence.

The 21-year old midfielder has started Everton’s last three Premier League games, and for the most part he has impressed in his role alongside midfield partner Gomes.

However following the Portugal international’s horrific fractured dislocation of his ankle against Spurs last weekend, there will be an even bigger demand for Davies to step it up even more.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, Ball, explains how it is now up to Davies to prove why he deserves to be Everton’s first-choice midfield option for the long-term. Ball said:

It’s come under very sad circumstances but Tom has to grab his chance now. Since he’s come into the team, he’s shown the quality he’s got and hasn’t let anyone down.

You always want to see local lads doing well and he’s shown he deserves to be in the starting line up, he’s been one of our stand-out players since coming back into the side.

I’m made up for Tom and he just needs a good little run now of six or seven games where he’s keeping those 8/9 out of 10 performances going so he can make the spot his own and there could even be opportunities for him in the England set-up.

Obviously Tom has got to focus on Everton first and foremost but if he can put consistent performances in at his best level, it could really set up his career.

In other news, Andre Gomes has been discharged from hospital following successful surgery on his ankle.

Davies has been impressive in recent weeks and Ball is right to encourage the midfielder to keep maintaining that level going forward.

With Gomes now missing there will be added impetus for the midfielder to add a creative spark, especially if Gylfi Sigurdsson doesn’t return to the starting line-up.

Davies has been a promising starlet for so long and it is now the time for him to kick on and become a regular senior member of Everton’s squad that can be relied upon.
