Gordon could feature against Southampton this weekend

Everton fans could finally see Anthony Gordon make his Premier League debut against Southampton this weekend.

Many fans have been calling on the club to hand the talented 18-year old his full Everton debut for some time now, and Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy game may have given a hint that he is set to link up with the squad at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Gordon has been a regular mainstay in David Unsworth Under-21s for the EFL Trophy, as well as in his Under-23s squad in the Premier League 2.

However, Gordon was completely left out of Tuesday night’s squad to face Crewe Alexandra, a game in which the Toffees drew 2-2, causing some to speculate that the attacking midfielder could join the senior set-up this weekend.

Gordon did travel with the senior squad last week as the Blues beat Watford in the Carabao Cup, but ultimately Gordon was left out of the match-day 18 to take on the Hornets, which means his inclusion doesn’t automatically suggest a debut is close.

However with Silva having spoken before about how close Gordon is to breaking through at Goodison Park, and with Andre Gomes’ injury leaving Everton’s midfield options in short supply, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Gordon line-up on the bench.

Everton also have to prove that young players have a direct route to the first team on Merseyside. Lewis Gibson is the subject of much exit speculation at the moment with no game time for him in sight, with Nathangelo Markelo has also spoken out about being ready to play first team football, potentially elsewhere if Everton don’t give him a chance.

Keeping talented young players has to be paramount for the Toffees, as does bringing through those who have shown talent and promise. By promoting Gordon and finally giving him a chance to impress, it definitely sends the right message.
