Romeu wants to put Everton under pressure from “the first minute” this weekend

Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu wants to put Everton under pressure from minute one this weekend.

Everton will travel to St Mary’s on Saturday to face a Southampton side who are one of the few sides in the Premier League in worse form than the Toffees themselves.

With a win over the Blues at the weekend, Saints would move level on points with Everton, where they would be remain in the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

Talking to the Daily Echo, the Spanish midfielder made clear that he knows how important a result over Everton would be for the club. Romeu said:

It’s going to be crucial. It’s going to be massive.

We’ve put ourselves in a situation now where we must win against Everton and that’s the key to giving us a good situation afterwards.

Playing at home, we want to have a better feeling because the last game was awful. It wasn’t good at all.

We want to win to have a connection with the fans and give them also positive feelings from the first minute.

Everton aren’t doing very well and if we can put them under pressure early one, then we can have a good game.

We want to make them feel uncomfortable and make it tough for them.

When Everton face Southampton this weekend the pressure on Marco Silva will be palpable, with the boss extremely unlikely to keep his job unless he wins.

Southampton are combative and will want to win more than Everton, for sure. They’re in a precarious position and they’ll be desperate to take advantage of a bellow part Toffees side.

Fabian Delph will be so crucial in establishing a tempo against Southampton. If Saints are allowed to run the game, especially in the midfield area, it could be a long 90 minutes.

Silva will also need to be smart, tactically, to find a way to edge past Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side else he could be looking for a new job by the time the international break is over.
