Everton make contact with Inter over Vecino deal

Everton have made contact with Inter Milan over a deal for midfielder Matias Vecino, according to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri.

Corriere dello Sport (cited by Sempre Inter) reported earlier this week that Everton were interested in signing the Uruguayan midfielder, as they continue their search for midfield reinforcements before the end of the January transfer window.

The Italian outlet (via Sempre Inter) claimed that Everton had submitted an ‘important’ offer to sign the 28-year old, although Inter were unlikely to sell until they could find a replacement.

Now Palmeri has added fuel to the fire, claiming that the Blues have indeed been in contact with the Nerazzurri over a potential deal, although the journalist didn’t provide any more information than that.

The Uruguay international was linked with a move to Goodison Park in June 2018 by Tuttosport, and maybe the Toffees will now finally land their man during this current window.

Vecino has played an important role in Antonio Conte’s side this season, having played 14 of Inter’s 19 Serie A games, with ten of them coming from a starting position (WhoScored). Doing so in a side who are serious competitors for the Serie A title isn’t the only measure of quality, but it is certainly one way to value his ability.

The 28-year old has primarily operated in a central role this season, although he can also operate in a more advanced position if and when required, and that level of versatility would make him a valuable addition to a squad that is lacking both creative players who can link midfield and attack, and box-to-box players who can help dictate tempo.

Palmeri isn’t the most reliable of sources, so Everton’s supposed contact with Inter should be taken with a pinch of salt, but should the Toffees have actually made contact than they could do far worse than sign the midfielder, currently valued at around £20.7million (via Transfermarkt).
