Trabzonspor’s asking price for Cakir should put Everton off
Trabzonspor have named their price for reported Everton, Tottenham and Liverpool target Ugurcan Cakir, as reported by Samanyolu Haber.
Earlier this week, it was reported by Fotospor (as cited by Turkish Football) that both Spurs and the Toffees had sent representatives to watch the Turkish international goalkeeper in action.
Despite Carlo Ancelotti publicly claiming that he had no need for a new goalkeeper to replace Jordan Pickford, the Blues’ lack of backup options could see the club dip into the transfer market for a shot-stopper in the summer.
Joao Virigina will likely leave the club on loan against next season, while Jonas Lossl joined Huddersfield on loan in January after failing to impress at Finch Farm. Maarten Stekelenburg will see his contract expire in the summer too, meaning the club could be low on options.
This has led to reports of Everton’s interest in Cakir, who has impressed in the Super Lig this season, but who Fotospor report is almost certain to leave Trabzonspor in the summer.
According to Samanyolu Haber, Trabzonspor will want bids of between €25million and €30million before they consider letting Cakir leave the club in the summer.
While the 23-year old may have impressed for Black Sea Storm in recent months, Everton should not consider spending so much money on a goalkeeper, unless Pickford is to leave Goodison Park.
The Toffees looked to have pulled off a bit of a masterstroke in signing Lossl last summer, as the Denmark international, who boasted Premier League experience, cost the club nothing in transfer fees, having been released by Huddersfield.
This time around though, the club may not be able to find a suitable backup who is available for nothing, but paying at least €20million for someone who would essentially be a bacjup player isn’t what the club needs to do in the market.
Everton announced last month that they had suffered record financial losses, and while we don’t yet know how that will impact Ancelotti’s summer spending, we do know that the club likely won’t be able to waste their resources when other positions and other players will be of greater importance.
Pickford has been slammed by fans on a number of occasions this season for failing to live up to the expected levels that the England No.1 set himself through his performances last season.
However, his inconsistent form is unlikely to see Everton seek a new first choice ‘keeper, and in that case, they cannot afford to waste so much money on a second string player.
