VAR controversy, red cards, fantastic goals – the Merseyside derby truly had it all.
Delivering on fan expectations, both Everton and Liverpool had vital form to build upon and a point to prove to their local rivals.
The game was ripe with key points; in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored from a Lucas Digne cross with a towering header whilst Jordan Henderson controversially had a 92nd-minute winner ruled out for a questionable and marginal offside decision that went to VAR.
Whilst Liverpool fans might feel a sense of indignation over the decision, Everton fans undoubtedly contrasted their rivals’ emotions: members of Everton’s entourage could be seen leaping into the air in jubilation after the goal was ruled out.
Despite the commendable competitiveness at Goodison Park, one of the darker highlights of the heated fixture was Everton ‘keeper Jordan Pickford’s reckless and endangering challenge on Virgil van Dijk. Pickford was adjudged to have not conceded a penalty after an offside call was given, though many viewers will be left scratching their heads as to why Pickford was not given a punishment for his conduct. It has since been confirmed that van Dijk will need to undergo knee surgery.
Everton, who remain top of the Premier League with 13 points, narrowly eclipse their neighbours in 3rd with 10 points. Everton have yet to record a victory over their rivals in the last 10 years of contestation between the two sides.

Michael Keane outstanding. Godfrey filled in admirably out of position. And even in a poor performance, this team has enough from James, Digne and DCL to produce moments to change games
