What Jordan Pickford told Robin Olsen before Newcastle Defeat

Everton debutant Robin Olsen has revealed what he was told by team-mate Jordan Pickford ahead of the Toffees’ 2-1 weekend defeat away to Newcastle.

Pickford was a notable absentee from the starting XI against Steve Bruce’s side after coming under scrutiny for a number of previous errors.

Despite the competition between the two players, the goalkeeping duo maintain a positive relationship. Olsen has revealed that Pickford wished the Swedish international well in comments to Everton TV.

We train and speak together every day and [before kick-off] he said ‘Good luck, all the best’.

All of the goalkeepers here are good guys.

We’ve had good sessions every day and push each other and help each other to be better.

I am really happy to work with Alan Kelly.

I heard good things about him when I signed and I was looking forward to starting work with him.

Olsen also offered insights into the personal differences he has experienced between the English and Italian top divisions.

It is a different technique over here from Italy – everything is different, which I am happy about.

Sometimes this [Premier League requirements] fits better for an individual than the other one [what is needed in Italy].

I am enjoying going to training to try to improve myself every day.

Although Pickford was dropped to the bench against Newcastle, he is set to return to Carlo Ancelotti’s starting line-up in their match against Manchester United this weekend after the  manager indicated he was simply keeping Pickford away from the limelight for a spell.

Olsen’s comments are reassuring; they indicate a decent rapport between the goalkeepers, with no animosity surrounding Olsen’s role in competing with Pickford for a starting spot between the posts.

That mutual respect is needed – any friction risks souring the morale of the squad as they hope to resume winning ways.
