As Premier League teams clamour to initiate deals for the January transfer window, one key Everton player has caught the eye of Manchester City as they look to recruit a new left-back.

Few would doubt how integral Lucas Digne has been to Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The £18m signing from Barcelona has featured strongly in both an offensive and defensive capacity in his 87 appearances for Everton.

During that time, he has scored five goals and set up a further 17, figures which look rather impressive considering that Digne has almost always served as a defender.

It is perhaps unsurprising that Manchester City are eyeing him up as a potential option to fit Pep Guardiola’s system as the Cityzens look to reclaim the Premier League title from current champions and Everton’s arch-rivals Liverpool.

According to the Daily Mail, there is a ‘liking’ for Digne from Manchester City, who are seeking to replace £90,000-a-week man Benjamin Mendy.

Despite the 27-year-old currently suffering from an ankle ligament injury, that has failed to stop the four-time Premier League champions from identifying him as a top target going into the January winter window.

There is little need to sell Digne, especially in the context of his importance to the Toffees.

Conversely, the interest is a compliment; it is a nod to his ability as perhaps one of the best left-backs in the Premier League along with the likes of Andy Robertson, Alex Telles and Ben Chilwell.

Perhaps a new contract for Digne should be on the cards as a show of faith from Everton – and a useful tool to ward off suitors.
