Legendary commentator Martin Tyler has heaped praise on Everton’s “terrific” display in their resounding 3-0 victory over Chelsea last time out.

Tyler was at Hill Dickinson Stadium this week as Everton hosted an event to commemorate the iconic victory over Bayern Munich in the 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final, a match he commentated on.

A come-from-behind win at a packed-out Goodison Park that was perhaps Everton’s greatest European night. Martin Tyler believes a return to European football for the Toffees is certainly attainable.

Martin Tyler: ‘Everton Were Terrific’

“I watched the Chelsea game, and I thought Everton were terrific,” Tyler told evertonfc.com. “People ask me a lot: ‘Is football the same as it was? Has some of the fun come out of it because it’s become so professional?’ That Everton performance was – in any generation – worth a 3-0 win. It was based on very good defending, a fantastic goalkeeper and having the ability to make the most of the ball when they got it.”

The result leaves David Moyes’ side eighth in the Premier League table on 46 points, level with Brentford in seventh. The Blues are just two points off Chelsea in sixth and three from Liverpool in fifth. Tyler believes European qualification is within reach.

“Europe’s definitely in reach, which would be great,” he said. “And I really hope Everton do it.”

Adapting to Hill Dickinson Stadium

Tyler, who has commentated on Everton matches across multiple decades, noted the challenges of moving to a new stadium but believes the team has now found its feet.

“I’ve experienced moving from the Goodison gantry to the Hill Dickinson gantry – and you have to adjust as a broadcaster. So, the players and staff will have all had to adjust, and that’s always going to cause teething troubles. But now, it’s back-to-back wins [at Hill Dickinson Stadium].”

“I thought Beto had a great game. I was a very ordinary non-league centre-forward, so I know when you’re stuck up there on your own… I played in some bad teams. But Beto had a big part to play and took his chances extremely well.”

‘That’s a real compliment to Everton’

Martin Tyler reserved special praise for Ndiaye’s goal, which sealed the victory in style.

“To wrap it up, Iliman Ndiaye’s goal. Caicedo is a very good player, but he couldn’t do anything about it. The shot was postage-stamp perfect.”

The commentator’s assessment of Everton’s defensive display was equally glowing. “They made Chelsea, who have great resources, look extremely ordinary. That’s a real compliment to Everton.”

Tyler’s final message to David Moyes and his players was clear. “If I was Moyesy, I’d be saying: ‘That’s what you’ve got to do every week. You’ve set your standard.’ And I’m sure they’ll be able to do it plenty of times before the end of the season.”

With seven games remaining and European qualification firmly in their sights, Everton will hope to replicate that standard. The backing of a broadcasting legend who has witnessed some of the club’s greatest nights suggests they are on the right track.
