- Andy Gray claims he’d be surprised if Moyes is not offered a contract renewal
- Says Everton haven’t “found a centre-forward” yet and need to address this.
- Wants them to score more at home and make Hill Dickinson Stadium a fortress.
Everton hero of the 1980s, Andy Gray, sent a message to the Everton owners this week as the Blues find themselves in a heated race for European football.
Since arriving in January 2025, David Moyes has spearheaded a phenomenal U-turn at the club, and Gray has praised his compatriot for this.
But while the former Everton striker has praised his old club this season, he still believes they could improve in the final third of the pitch.
Andy Gray wants David Moyes to stay and a new man up top
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Gray urged Everton to renew Moyes’ contract with the club, but wanted to see an improvement in the strikers’ department.
He said: “I would like to think there’s no argument for him to get a new contract, no argument at all for me.
“I would be amazed if Everton doesn’t offer David a new contract. I’d be disappointed as well. I think David’s done a fantastic job. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves.”
Gray pointed out that Moyes has done a wonderful job of building a resilient defence for the Blues, but they need to enhance their options at the top of the pitch.
He added: “At the moment, Everton haven’t found a centre-forward, and I think that’s part of the problem. They’ve got talented footballers, there’s no doubt about it.
“Talented footballers with creative ability, just not enough finishers. So they obviously don’t score enough goals. I’d like to see them score more goals, particularly at home.”
Everton have struggled at home this season, but their 3-0 victory against Chelsea showed their capability to demolish teams on their own turf.
Space could be made for a third striker at Everton
Moyes’ current striking options consist of Thierno Barry and Beto, who have neither made a clear claim to the starting striker spot for the Blues.
| Player | Goals | Appearances – All competitions |
| Beto | 7 | 34 |
| Thierno Barry | 6 | 33 |
Both forwards are similar in the output they have recorded this season, but they also have differing styles of play.
While Beto proves to be a bruising presence in the centre of the field, Barry has shown his ability on the wing and aids the attack by drifting out wide.
If Everton are to qualify for Europe next season, two different strikers would suit the varying fixture schedule they would face.
On top of this, the potential of purchasing a third striker would give Moyes the ability to tinker with new formations and bring healthy competition for his current attacking line.
