  • Jordan Pickford is regarded as Everton’s finest goalkeeper

Former England captain John Terry had a stellar career for England. Terry debuted for the Three Lions in

2003 and went on to make 78 appearances over nine years, captaining the national team as well.

John Terry was part of the famous golden generation as well. When recently asked to pick a combined line‑up of current and former England stars. Among the legends of the 2006 “Golden Generation”, Terry made a surprising but thoroughly justified choice between the sticks. He selected Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

John Terry played alongside some of the finest goalkeepers of his era, including David Seaman and David James. Yet he believes the current Everton number one would be good enough to start for that iconic 2006 squad.

Pickford’s England journey to undisputed No. 1

Jordan Pickford made his full England debut in November 2017 in a friendly against Germany at Wembley. He started amazing, keeping a clean sheet on his first senior appearance. Since then, he has been England’s undisputed first choice. Recently, against Japan, he earned his 82nd cap, surpassing the legendary Rio Ferdinand.

“I wear the England shirt with immense pride and I think everyone in the country knows how much it means to me,” Pickford has said. He acknowledged that 100 caps is a target, but stressed the bigger picture. “There are goals – but we know the main goal and it’s a team game. I’ve always said, I don’t even care if I concede four goals, as long as we win 5-4. It’s a team game and I want to win matches.”

On playing for England, Jordan Pickford added, “Playing for England has been so important for me and an incredible experience. All of those games have helped me prepare for now, when you’re away from home for weeks at a time, you learn things and it’s about enjoying it as well.”

Rooney believes Jordan Pickford has been incredible for England

Pickford’s quality has not gone unnoticed by fellow England greats. Wayne Rooney, speaking previously, said: “His performances for Everton but more so for England in the big tournaments, have been incredible. When people talk about keepers worldwide, he doesn’t get mentioned that often but he is definitely up there.”

This season, Pickford has 11 Premier League clean sheets, helping Everton remain in contention for European qualification. His command of the box and ability to perform under pressure have made him a mainstay for both club and country.

John Terry’s selection is the latest recognition of a player who has quietly become one of England’s most reliable and longest‑serving internationals. To be chosen ahead of the goalkeepers of the Golden Generation is no small praise. For Everton fans, it is confirmation of what they have known for years. Jordan Pickford belongs among the very best.
