- Everton team news reveals Beto’s return, while no new injuries were reported
- David Moyes is yet to record a win against Pep Guardiola
- Everton haven’t lost three consecutive games this season
Everton welcome Manchester City to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday night. There is positive team news for David Moyes. Beto has been declared fit and available after completing concussion protocols.
Beto, who has four goals and one assist in his past three appearances, is expected to return to the starting lineup ahead of Thierno Barry.
However, the Blues will still be without Jarrad Branthwaite (hamstring) and Jack Grealish (foot), who remain sidelined for the Toffees. Michael Keane is expected to partner James Tarkowski in central defence once again.
Everton team news: David Moyes confirms Beto’s return
Speaking in Friday’s pre-match press conference at Hill Dickinson Stadium, manager David Moyes provided the update. “Yes, [Beto] has had to go through the protocol for concussion, which was correct, so he’s gone through that period and he’s been training.”
Asked about any other fitness concerns, Moyes added, “At the moment, everything is as we are. Like [always], we have a few knocks and niggles so we’ll just have to see how we are come Monday night.”
City’s injury problems and historical records
Manchester City have their own injury issues. Rodri suffered a calf injury during the recent 2‑1 win over title rivals Arsenal. Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol are also ruled out. Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected back in goal after James Trafford started the FA Cup semi-final.
Everton are in the bottom half of the table and need serious results for any chance of European qualification next season. However, history is against them. David Moyes is yet to record a win against Pep Guardiola in 15 previous meetings, while this will be his 16th.
Everton have also lost their last eight home games to Manchester City. City are unbeaten in their last 11 games and have collected 24 points in that run.
Pep Guardiola isn’t taking Everton lightly
Still, Guardiola has acknowledged the challenge. “Always Everton have been tough. Old Everton was so cool and so British and I loved to go there but in the new stadium they are defending really well and always it has been tough. In recent weeks, Everton have had very good results and are fighting for a place in Europe.”
Everton’s recent Premier League form sees just two wins in the last 6 games. They have conceded late goals in their last two games. City’s form, meanwhile, suggests a different story. They are on a run of three consecutive wins and haven’t lost in their last six league games.
The Toffees are yet to suffer three consecutive Premier League losses this season, a record they will be desperate to maintain. Manchester City, meanwhile, have their own motivation for the Everton game. They look to derail Arsenal from the title race. Monday night represents both a huge challenge and an opportunity for Everton to break their poor run against Pep Guardiola’s in-form Manchester City.
With Beto back and a passionate home crowd behind them for Manchester City’s first trip to Hill Dickinson Stadium, Moyes will hope for a positive result to keep European hopes alive for Everton.
