Enough is enough – Why Everton fans need to lay off Heung-min Son

Heung-min Son has become the latest fascination of the Everton fan base, and it has got to stop now.

The South Korea international was responsible for a horrific injury dealt upon Andre Gomes on Sunday, when Tottenham faced Everton at Goodison Park.

Son tackled the midfielder with vengeance and unintentionally caused Gomes to suffer a fractured dislocation of his right ankle, an injury that will definitely put him out of action for quite some time.

Son was visibly distraught after noticing the extent of Gomes’ injury, and since then the forward has been slammed and criticised by almost every Everton fan under the sun.

Now it is time to move on and grow up.

Son intentionally didn’t celebrate after scoring a brace against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Wednesday night out of respect for Gomes, and that was a nice touch that the forward did not need to do.

However, he was again slammed online for… reasons, I guess?

Having caused untold damage that cannot be taken back, Son was attempting to be respectful to a man he knows faces a long road ahead of him because of his actions, but he has only received grief of his own in return.

Son is not THE victim of the incident, but he is a victim, although to a much lesser extent than Gomes of course. Fans have seemingly forgotten that footballers are human beings with emotions and feelings, they’re not all sociopathic monsters who cannot feel empathy or guilt.

I would also label anyone who claims that they have never been reckless in the heat of the moment as a liar, because Son may have intended on getting one back on Gomes, but he clearly never intended to have the impact that he did.

Son’s actions caused physical and mental trauma for Gomes, but also mental trauma for Son himself, and that is something that is being disregarded across the board. I can understand fan frustration directed at portions of the media who barely spare a word for Gomes because they’re too busy talking about Son’s condition, but his condition is also one that is important.

Instead of dedicating so much time to slamming Son on social media and hurling abuse in his direction, Everton fans would be much better suited offering their support and love to Andre Gomes. They claim that the media isn’t paying the midfielder enough attention, so why can’t they do that themselves?

Make Gomes feel like he is at a club where the fans care about the wellbeing of their players. Make Gomes feel like Everton fans will stick by him as he works along the long road to recovery.

Stop slamming a player who realistically doesn’t matter. If Spurs want to band around him and give him support, that is their prerogative. If the media want to blow more smoke, let them, it isn’t the first time Everton have been overlooked and it won’t be the last.

Instead let us show people that actually matter in the eyes of Everton and Evertonians across the board, people like Gomes, that fans are focusing their energy on being supportive of him, and not vindictive over someone else.
