Alan Shearer wowed by Andros Townsend against Burnley

Former Newcastle star Alan Shearer has included Andros Townsend in his team of the week and had a bountiful number of good things to say about the new Everton ace.

His inclusion was noted on the official Premier League website after the winger’s ‘stunning’ goal to help Everton beat Burnley on Monday.

He got off to a flying start in Everton colours with his first league goal coming from some way out against Burnley on Monday. Additionally, he supplied an assist for Michael Keane as he scored a powerful header beyond the reaches of the Burnley defence and Nick Pope.

The former Crystal Palace winger shimmied through the lines to get his wonder shot off in a fine mark of hard work and individual flair, with Shearer succinctly praising the experienced winger.

“A brilliant display,” Shearer said. “Produced an assist for the equaliser and then netted a stunning strike from distance.”

A good night’s work for Townsend is sure to bring a smile to the faces of ardent Evertonians.

He already opened his account in the colours of the Royal Blues with his goal in the 2-1 Carabao Cup and a wonder goal is a sure-fire way for the winger to swiftly endear himself to the Toffees.

The free transfer from Crystal Palace is making a fast impression in the handful of games he has featured in and more of the same will go far from amiss.

Townsend had only scored twice in his last 61 Premier League games before opening his Everton account in style. He also struck just once in 24 appearances for Crystal Palace during 2019/20 and one in 34 last season.

Despite having far from a prolific record in front of goal, his fast start provides hope for fast improvements.

matchday.
