Ancelotti dismisses all speculated players as ‘wrong’ targets

Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed all of the transfer speculation that has surrounded the club recently, claiming it is all ‘wrong’ when speaking in his pre-match press conference.

The Italian was asked about potential incomings at Everton this month, and while he wouldn’t be drawn on naming specific players, Ancelotti did dismiss all of those who have already been mentioned, saying (via Liverpool Echo’s Phil Kirkbride):

All of the names in the papers are wrong.

Many of the club’s reported targets have been former Ancelotti players, with Piotr Zielinski (Milan News 24), Dries Mertens (Calciomercato) and Lorenzo Insigne (Le 10 Sport) just some of the names mentioned in relation to the Toffees.

For none of the names that have been linked with the club in recent weeks to be genuine, that would be an interesting development, but at the same time it isn’t the most shocking thing to believe. Many players that have seen their name linked with Everton have been former Ancelotti players, and while they could have been stories with a degree of credence, they could equally have been lazy journalism or presumptive reporting.

Ancelotti did confirm (via Phil Kirkbride) that Everton “could be” on the lookout for a new midfielder this month, which could give Everton fans hope that the club will indeed bring fresh talent to Goodison Park.

With injuries to Andre Gomes and JP Gbamin still persisting, and with Fabian Delph (Vital Football), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Sportslens) and Morgan Schneiderlin (Mail Online) all receiving their fair share of fan criticism, the club could do with fresh blood in midfield.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the transfer window unfolds, and with Everton having confirmed that Cenk Tosun has left to join Crystal Palace on loan, Ancelotti may have room to spend.
