Everton’s sale of Gordon left a sour taste in the mouths of many Toffees supporters as it was disheartening to see one of their key players abandon the team in such a time of need.
Although it was a big loss at the time, the injection of cash brought about by selling the winger made the club’s awful financial situation look a tad more positive.
On top of the £40 million fee the Blues received, they also included a 15% sell-on clause if Newcastle chose to sell the Englishman in the future, according to The Athletic.
With the Toon looking to generate a large fee from this sale, Everton could see a handy boost in their finances, considering Gordon has previously been linked with a £75 million move to Liverpool in 2024.
What could Everton use this additional income for?
The Toffees look set to receive at least £10 million from this move, which in modern football is not an excessive amount of money.
But this financial boost could prove handy for their plans to re-sign Jack Grealish on loan for the 2026-27 season.
It has been reported that the Manchester City loanee has a salary that is valued at around £12 million.
So if the Blues receive a sell-on fee that is around, or even above this figure, then it can be used to finance another year of the skillful winger.
Regardless of what Everton spends this additional income on, selling Gordon was seen to be a sucker punch at the time, but it has turned out to be a true blessing for the Toffees.
