Cahill reveals Zaha’s recent attitude – Why Everton should bid in January

Crystal Palace defender Gary Cahill has revealed what Wilfried Zaha was like falling his transfer to Everton falling through.

The Ivory Coast international looked set to join the Toffees in the final days of the transfer window, only for the Eagles to block a transfer on Deadline Day, despite Zaha having handed in a transfer request.

Zaha was linked with Arsenal beforehand, and continues to be linked with a move abroad before the international transfer window closes later this month.

However, new Palace signing Gary Cahill claims that failure to sign for the Toffees has not affected his attitude. When asked about Zaha’s reaction, talking to talkSPORT (via the Express), Cahill said:

First class to be honest with you.

And I know how difficult it can be when things like that are circulating in your head and you have to go through these emotions.

You’re so close to the start of the season and I realise it could be tough for him.

But I can only say off the back of what I’ve seen and once that didn’t materialise, the way he’s trained, his attitude to training and the way he has been around the place is first class.

That’s what I go off and for me there is no issue whatsoever.

He’s obviously a top, top player, that’s why clubs want him

Selfishly, I’m delighted he stayed because he could be the difference between three or four places in the league.

It isn’t yet clear whether Everton intend to come back with another offer for Zaha in January, presuming he is still with the Eagles at the close of the summer window.

It doesn’t surprise me that Zaha has applied himself with the correct attitude for Palace since Deadline Day. The forward has always be considered a consummate professional, and he’ll likely remain as such until he eventually gets his transfer away, even if his heart isn’t truly in it for the Eagles.

It speaks a lot for his character, which also makes clubs ever the more keen to sign him. I think Everton will likely have moved on come January, but if not I’d very much like to see the club go all out to buy the forward.
