There has been plenty of discussion in the media over these past few weeks about the top six, and Everton’s chances at breaking through the glass ceiling of England’s elite.
Several pundits have claimed that with Chelsea under a transitional stage, due to their inexperienced head coach and their transfer embargo, and with Manchester United struggling for consistency, the Toffees could see this season as the perfect time to upset the traditional order.
Yet Everton have issues of their own. They must contend with Leicester and Wolves, who will both be competing for the same Premier League spots, while they have their own shortcomings in their squad.
Without having adequately replaced Kurt Zouma, Everton have just three senior centre-backs to last until January, while so far their strike force has been drawing blanks in front of goal.
There is room to improve for Everton, but consistency will ultimately be king this season, and if Leicester could win the title with the squad they had then the Blues should feel confident in their ability to breach the league’s upper echelon.

I have maintained throughout the summer that Everton will struggled to win that spot this season, with seventh place even difficult to claim. Despite their poor start to the season, Wolves aren’t a team fans should be glossing over, and Leicester are proving their quality already this season, being just one of three teams currently unbeaten in the Premier League.
Everton have the players to mount a challenge, of course, but it all comes down to consistency. Can these players perform on a weekly basis? Everton can’t allow games like that at Aston Villa to happen. You can excuse losing to the Manchester City’s of the league, but these smaller teams need to be brushed aside, otherwise we can kiss those hopes goodbye.
I’m confident in the squad and in Marco Silva’s coaching ability, but I think breaking that top tier this season is a really tough ask.
