Carragher admits confusion over Everton fans’ dismissal of Moyes as Silva replacement

Jamie Carragher has explained that he doesn’t understand Everton fans’ dismissal of David Moyes as an option to replace Marco Silva.

Current Everton boss Silva appears to be on borrowed time at Goodison Park, having drawn the straw that broke the camel’s back after losing at home to Norwich last weekend.

As well as Moyes, many media outlets have reported that Mark Hughes and Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe are prime targets for the Toffees, who are determined to identify the right man to replace former Watford coach Silva in the Goodison Park hot-seat.

However, fan outcry at the aforementioned names has been considerable large, with many Everton supporters not keen to see the Scotsman return to the club that he managed for 11 years.

Talking on Monday Night Football (via the Liverpool Echo), Carragher admitted that he was bewildered that Everton fans don’t want their former long-term boss back, especially given how successful he was at establishing Everton as a top half club in the Premier League.

Sharing his views on Moyes’ potential return, Carragher said:

But the big question is, I’ve actually spoken to a few Everton fans over the weekend and I’ve got a lot in my family, everyone you mention, they say they don’t want him [David Moyes].

There is talk of David Moyes coming back in almost a Big Sam role in terms of keeping them up, they’re so against that you could not believe and I can’t believe it considering the job that he’s done, but it’s almost like they’re judging David Moyes on what he has done since Everton.

Reacting on social media though, many Everton fans explained why Moyes isn’t a popular choice to succeed Silva.

Read Everton Verdict

First and foremost, appointing David Moyes as Everton manager, even on a short-term deal, would send all of the wrong signals. The Toffees are attempting to progress as a club, with many resources to do so, and appointing a manager who left years ago would only give off the impression that the club are moving backwards.

Moyes’ tactics and playing style wouldn’t suit the current crop of players at the club either, so he would likely struggle to impress even on a short-term basis.

More so than anything else, Everton should always be looking to improve. Calls for Mauricio Pochettino are, of course, extremely optimistic, but it is better to aim higher than to settle for lesser managers who are consistently out of a job for a reason.
