Cenk Tosun edges closer to joining Crystal Palace

Cenk Tosun is close to completing a transfer to Crystal Palace, according to the the Liverpool Echo.

The Turkey international has been frequently linked with a move away from Goodison Park this month, with both Besiktas and Aston Villa having made attempts to sign him this past week, according to TRT Spor journalist Fatih Dogan (via Sport Witness) and Orta Cizgi (via Birmingham Live) respectively.

The 28-year has slipped down the pecking order under Carlo Ancelotti, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Moise Kean all preferred to the lead the line over the striker.

Now the Liverpool Echo report that Tosun is close to securing his exit, with Selhurst Park being the destination in question.

Paul Joyce of the The Times reported earlier this week that Tosun was nearing a loan move to join the Eagles, with Roy Hodgson’s side keen on signing at least one striker during this transfer window.

The Echo understand that Tosun has pushed for an exit, as he seeks more game time ahead of the upcoming European Championships, and following a meeting between Ancelotti and Marcel Brands last week, a decision was made to sanction an exit for the forward.

Everton still hope to sell the striker in the summer, with the Echo reporting that the club value Tosun at around £20million, having signed him for £27million two years ago this month (BBC Sport).

Cenk Tosun certainly hasn’t had the impact at Goodison Park that many thought he could have this season, having scored just once in eight appearances for the club (Transfermarkt). Despite goals being hard to come by at the beginning of the season, the Turk couldn’t take advantage of the chances awarded to him by Marco Silva.

Crystal Palace are in need of a striker this month and Tosun could represent a solid addition to their squad, as his technical ability on the ball and his striking ability with both feet make him a significant goal threat when played in the right system. Tosun is eager to impress, as the Echo report that he is focusing on being included in Turkey’s squad for Euro 2020, and with Palace’s need for a new forward he has every opportunity to impress.

Should he perform for the Eagles over the next five months, Everton will hope a string of good performances could increase their chances of shifting the striker in the summer.

Both with the £20million price tag and with Tosun’s high wages (£60,000 per week, according to Mirror Sport), the Blues will hope that he performs well enough in Croydon to tempt interested parties to make a gamble in the summer.
