Moyes contract talks hit new Everton obstacle amid ownership uncertainty

Everton unbeaten start: David Moyes in Everton training/match context speaking with another coach

David Moyes’ contract situation at Everton has reportedly been complicated by the uncertainty surrounding The Friedkin Group’s plans for the club.

Moyes is in the final year of his deal at the Hill Dickinson and confirmed last week that discussions over an extension had slowed. The Scot said there had been “plenty of talks” during the summer but admitted there was now “a bit of a lull” as Everton deal with renewed uncertainty off the pitch.

Football Insider has now reported that TFG’s decision to explore a potential sale of its controlling interest has delayed a decision over Moyes’ future. Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke said the situation had created uncertainty with the manager’s existing contract due to expire next summer.

David Moyes talks reportedly delayed

“It seems that any talks over his future will probably be delayed with the owners looking to sell, so we will wait and see what happens there,” O’Rourke said. He also suggested Moyes would attract interest from elsewhere if he became available, having rebuilt his reputation during his second spell at Everton.

The report goes further than Moyes himself has publicly done by suggesting he could leave when his contract expires. There has been no confirmation from Everton that negotiations have ended, while Moyes stressed on Friday that resolving his own future was not his immediate priority.

“I just want to keep trying to drive Everton on and build them up, and see if we can continue to improve,” he said.

Moyes returned to Everton in January 2025 and has helped restore stability on the pitch, with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Chelsea their first Premier League loss of the season. His contract situation nevertheless provides another issue to resolve at a time when TFG are considering Everton’s longer-term ownership.

For now, talks appear to have slowed rather than stopped. Whether they resume may depend on how Everton’s ownership situation develops over the coming months.
