Elliott Bretland highlights key strengths of top Everton target

Elliott Bretland has stipulated that Everton could turn to former manager Marco Silva’s Fulham team in order to plug a key gap within Everton’s midfield.

The writer took a deep look at the Cottagers’ Cameroonian midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa who is reportedly a £25 million-valued target for Premier League side Aston Villa.

The box-to-box enforcer was a key cog in Scott Parker’s Fulham side last season and operated frequently as part of a two-man pivot in a 4-2-3-1 system that reminds of Benitez’ own preferred tactics.

Anguissa has played a bit-part role for Fulham admit links back to the English top flight, but he did come off the bench in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Millwall on Tuesday evening.

Fulham may opt to cash in for a notable fee for the midfield star, though he clearly still has a place to nail down as his own at Fulham.

Commenting on Everton fans’ expectations and what the squad needs in the Echo, Bretland claimed:

“As Evertonians put together a transfer wishlist in their minds this summer, a ball-carrying midfielder featured heavily.

“Together with a new right-back, a couple of wingers and perhaps a new deputy striker, Blues are keen to see someone drive at the opposition from deep and get the Toffees up the pitch.

“Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa certainly has the ability to charge forward and keep possession and the Fulham player has been linked with a switch to Goodison Park this month.

“Former Everton manager Marco Silva – now in charge at Fulham – spoke out on the future of his prized asset this week after the £25m-rated star was also linked with Aston Villa.”

As Bretland rightly notes in his analysis, the midfielder is a progressive ball-carrier and is reliably unafraid to play successful passes forward and shoot at goal.

He made 409 forward passes and only 258 passes in the other direction last season, whilst his 34 attempts on goal comfortably out-do Everton’s central options under Carlo Ancelotti.

Doucoure hit 18 shots, Gomes managed 14 and Tom Davies and Allan struck seven apiece.

More startlingly, Alex Iwobi, Bernard and Josh King recorded a combined 24 efforts on goal – some ten less than the deeper-lying midfielder between them.

His progressive nature could compliment a more defensive enforcer, such as Allan, superbly.
