Having conceded two goals in two minutes in added time against Newcastle, Everton’s late capitulation was a bitter bill to swallow.
The Toffees had dominated the lion-share of the Premier League fixture at Goodison Park in the early stages, and they deserved to take the lead around the half hour mark.
Moise Kean latched onto a chipped ball over the defensive line from Bernard before calmly striking through Martin Dubravka in Newcastle’s goal, finally getting off the mark for his new club in what was his best performance this season.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it two for Everton shortly after the restart for the second half, turning and crashing the ball past Dubravka’s left after Lucas Digne fed him with a slick ground pass deep into the box.
With 90+3 minutes on the clock, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that Everton had all three points in the bag, but alas the club find new ways to disappoint on a monthly basis.
Newcastle centre-back Florian Lejeune produced two moments of magic for the Magpies, with the first coming from an overhead kick, and the second from a goal mouth scramble that Jordan Pickford should have saved, if only he hadn’t been stood behind his goal-line.
Everton will see the positives, with Moise Kean now up and running and another with point in the bag, but it is deflating to know how close Everton came to another win which could have put them two points off fifth in the Premier League table.
Here is how we rated the Everton players:
