Having lost John Stones last summer, Everton are trotting out Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams at centre-back currently.
The pair are both ageing and won’t have many years at the top level left in them and the Toffees need to get younger in defence in the summer.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton are considering a summer move for Villarreal centre-back Mateo Musacchio, but face competition from Serie A giants AC Milan for his signature.
The 26-year-old arrived in La Liga back in 2009 from River Plate and has developed into one of the divisions best centre-backs, but has struggled for fitness over the last few years, missing 72 games since the start of the 2014/15 season.
Capped six times by Argentina, Musacchio is valued at £15m and is shortlisted by Director of Football Steve Walsh as one of a number of possible defensive additions.
Burnley’s Michael Keane and Hull’s Harry Maguire are both also on Everton’s radar entering the summer transfer window.
