Everton could take advantage as Arsenal suffer blow in David pursuit

Everton could look to benefit as Gent forward Jonathan David doesn’t look set to join Arsenal, according to the player’s agent.

Jeunes Footeux reported last week that Leicester, Arsenal and the Toffees had all registered an interest in the Canada international, who has starred in Belgium this season.

Playing primarily as an attacking midfielder, David has scored 18 goals in 25 league games in the Belgian First Division A, subsequently attracting the interest of a number of clubs.

However, Arsenal fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, with David’s agent Nick Mavromaros claiming that a move to the Emirates would be too big of a jump for the 20-year old. Talking to HLN (via football.london), Mavromaros said:

Take Arsenal. We’ll talk about top five in the Premier League.

The next step has to be a smart one, so maybe that’s too big a jump at the moment. The whole picture has to be right. In what field does a club play?

How does the coach feel about Jonathan? How sure is he of a base pitch? An intermediate step might be better sometimes.I understand that Gent would still like to keep Jonathan, but the club will also like it Gent got him for zero euros, and he will now leave for a record amount.

With David unlikely to make such an immediate step up, Everton could look to turn the versatile attacker’s situation to their advantage.

While Arsenal might be too much of a jump for David, Everton could be more representative of a middling standard, with the player getting the benefit of playing in the Premier League without biting off more than he can chew to begin with.

Believed to cost £21 million in the summer, the young star could prove to be Everton’s immediate answer to their Gylfi Sigurdsson problem, with the Icelandic midfielder having failed to impress for the L4 Azzurri for some time.

Should Marcel Brands elect to swing the axe this summer, the 30-year old could head out the exit door at Finch Farm, and David could be someone who could come in and make an immediate impact, should the Blues elect to move quick enough to beat out their competitors.

matchday.
