Double Everton appointment: Dean Rastrick and Neil Dewsnip handed key roles at Finch Farm

Everton have confirmed the appointment of Dean Rastrick as the club’s new academy director. The 50‑year‑old will take up duties at Finch Farm on 1 June.

He will be replacing Gareth Prosser on a permanent basis following an extensive recruitment process led by technical director Nick Cox.

Rastrick arrives with a wealth of experience. He spent 13 years at Tottenham Hotspur, rising from academy performance manager to academy manager, where he oversaw Premier League Cup successes at under‑17 and under‑18 levels.

Rastrick’s arrival at Finch Farm marks a clear strategic shift for the Toffees. While the club has historically been a conveyor belt for elite talent, the recent Premier League landscape has made the “buy-to-play” model increasingly difficult.

By securing a specialist like Rastrick who famously navigated the high-pressure environment of a “Big Six” academy Everton are signaling a return to their roots: prioritising homegrown excellence to bolster the first-team squad and protect the club’s long-term financial health.

During his time in north London, Spurs produced a number of future Premier League talents, including Noni Madueke, Harry Winks, Marcus Edwards, Oliver Skipp and Kyle Walker‑Peters.

Dean Rastrick: ‘I feel privileged to be joining this incredible club’

Speaking after his appointment, Dean Rastrick expressed his excitement at leading Everton’s world‑renowned academy.

“I feel privileged to be joining this incredible club and academy at what is an extremely exciting period in its history,” he said.

“Everton is renowned for its track record of developing young talent and, with the help and support of everyone at Finch Farm, I’m relishing the challenge of building on the strong foundations that are already in place.

“I know there are some really talented and committed people at Everton. Part of my role will be to create an environment within the academy that supports and allows the players and staff to grow and evolve and, ultimately, operate at the highest level possible.”

Cox: ‘Dean is an expert in his field’

Technical director Nick Cox, who led the recruitment process, highlighted Rastrick’s credentials and the importance of the role within the club’s football structure.

“The academy director role is vitally important within our football structure, so it was essential we conducted a thorough recruitment process to identify the person with the right qualities to take our academy forwards,” Cox said.

“Dean is an expert in his field who has spent his entire career in youth development, working across English football, with Luton Town, Derby County and Norwich. However, I think the best reference point is the work he did over 13 years at Spurs, where he not only worked with some exceptional players during that period, but also built a reputation for developing staff too.”

Rastrick’s arrival is accompanied by the return of Neil Dewsnip. Dewship previously spent 17 years in Everton’s academy, coaching the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ross Barkley and Leon Osman. Dewsnip will act as an advisor to the football leadership group, providing technical expertise on coaching and player development.

It is more than just a personnel change it is a statement of intent. In a week where the club has faced scrutiny over its long-term financial strategy, investing in the infrastructure of the academy offers a beacon of stability for the Everton faithful.

With a track record of producing Premier League mainstays and a clear mandate from Nick Cox to “evolve” the current setup, Rastrick has the tools to ensure the path from the youth ranks to the Goodison Park (and soon, Bramley-Moore Dock) turf remains wide open.

As he prepares to take the reins on June 1, the message to the blue half of Merseyside is clear: the future of the club is being placed in very capable hands
