Everton failed in bid to land Leao – did the club miss out?

Rafael Leao rejected an approach from Everton in the summer, according to reports.

The Portugal youth international was linked with a move to Merseyside in the summer with Marco Silva keen on signing a young and exciting forward.

Ultimately, Everton brought Juventus starlet Moise Kean to Goodison Park, however not before making an offer for then Lille star Leao, according to reports.

According to Calciomercato, Everton bid ‘more than €30million’ for Leao but the move was rejected by the 20-year old.

The striker had already set his sights on joining AC Milan, so he rejected Everton’s late approach, instead signing for the Rossoneri for €25million.

Did Everton lose out?

I think if Kean hadn’t been brought to the club late into the transfer window, we’d be looking at this story in a very different light. Leao is relatively unknown on British shores, but we do know that he is talented and very highly rated.

Moise Kean is equally held in high regard, and is slightly younger than Leao. Plus, Kean has been playing at a larger club that Leao has been, with the Italian having succeed for the Bianconeri last season.

It still remains to be seen if Kean can adapt well to the Premier League, but I believe Everton landed the better player of the two.
