Everton fans are delighted to see Lewis Gibson commit future to club

Lewis Gibson is set to sign a new contract with Everton, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The 19-year old defender’s current contract is set to expire in the summer, and for a while it was unclear whether Gibson would re-commit to the Toffees.

Having signed from Newcastle for £6million in 2017, Everton had hoped to tie Gibson down to a new long-term contract, although the situation was complicated by several clubs registering an interest in the centre-back over the past few months.

Newcastle were reportedly interested in bringing Gibson back to Tyneside (The Northern Echo), while Ajax and PSV were also said to be keen on the defender (90min), as well as Celtic and Feyenoord (The Liverpool Echo).

However, the Liverpool Echo now report that talks between Everton and Gibson’s representatives have intensified over the past few weeks, and an agreement has finally been reached, with the defender set to sign later this week.

Following that, Gibson will seal a loan move away from Goodison Park for the remainder of the season, with Championship and League One sides keen on a temporary move.

The Liverpool Echo also report that Marcel Brands has mapped out Gibson’s future, with the defender likely to leave on loan again next summer, before returning to the first-team fold under Carlo Ancelotti afterward.

Having trained with the first-team on many occasions this season, a number of Everton fans had wanted to see the 19-year old breakthrough into both Marco Silva’s and Ancelotti’s set-up, and now several Toffees supporters have expressed their delight at this contract update on social media.
