Everton given boost as Salisu looks set to leave in January

Everton will be buoyed in their pursuit of Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu, with the Spanish club considering replacements, according to reports.

It was reported last month that Salisu had hit a brick wall in contract negotiations with Valladolid, with the club hoping to keep the Ghanaian in La Liga amid reported interest in his services.

Everton, Manchester United and Southampton have all been credited with holding an interest in the 20-year old centre-back, and with his low release clause, Valladolid know that they won’t be able to resist offers in January.

Now according to Pucela Fichajes (via Sport Witness), Valladolid have conceded that they will likely lose Salisu in January, having now turned to Huddersfield defender Terence Kongolo to replace him.

This will be positive news for Everton, who are on the hunt for a new centre-back in January, having only three senior options in that position at Goodison Park.

Everton will still have to fend off interest from both United and Saints, but they will feel more confident knowing that Valladolid have resigned themselves to the eventuality that they will lose their talented starlet.

Everton will certainly have been given a boost following this update, should Ancelotti want to pursue the Ghanaian.

Salisu, like a great many players linked over the last few months, was a target under Marco Silva, and we’re only left to assume that the club haven’t completely changed course under Ancelotti.

The Italian does like to have his say on transfers though, so he may find his own targets, although you’d think that Marcel Brands would be hands on in either approach. Either way, it is positive for Everton, should they show interest in Salisu, that his January departure is now a real possibility.
