Everton may have made the task of securing Harrison Armstrong’s long-term future more expensive following the collapse of his proposed summer move to Nottingham Forest.
That is the valid argument put forward by Patric Ridge in a ToffeeWeb opinion piece, which raises the question about the consequences of The Friedkin Group’s decision to even consider selling the 19-year-old midfielder.
Everton ultimately rejected Forest’s approach following a fierce backlash from Evertonians, but Ridge suggests the episode may have strengthened Armstrong’s negotiating position when discussions over a new contract take place.
Everton’s Armstrong decision could carry a financial cost
Armstrong signed his latest Everton contract in January 2025, with his current agreement running until June 2028. Since then, his development has accelerated, helped by a productive loan spell at Derby County and his growing involvement under David Moyes.
Ridge points out that Armstrong’s representatives now have a clearer indication of his market value, particularly after reports suggested a lucrative contract was being discussed during the proposed Forest move.
The midfielder’s performances have only strengthened his position. Ridge highlights his impressive physical output, including a reported 60.4 kilometres covered in the Premier League this season.
The concern is that Everton could find themselves paying considerably more than originally anticipated to secure a player who, despite his progress, is not yet guaranteed a starting place when everyone is available.
It is a reasonable point, particularly given that the club’s owners were prepared to entertain his departure only weeks ago.
There is no suggestion that Armstrong is unhappy at Everton or that contract negotiations have encountered problems. Nevertheless, Patric’s argument highlights a potential consequence of the summer transfer saga that may not have been fully recognised at the time.
For Moyes and the club’s hierarchy, retaining Armstrong was one important decision. Ensuring he remains at Everton for the longer term could prove another.
