Everton have had scouts in attendance to watch Benfica, according to reports, with a defender suggested as being on the club’s watchlist.
The Toffees have frequently watched games featuring Portugal’s big three over the past few months, especially Benfica, with Marco Silva likely to have significant knowledge of Liga NOS talent.
According to A Bola (via Sport Witness), Everton were in attendance as Benfica took on Vitoria on Wednesday night, where the Eagles drew 0-0 in the Taca da Liga.

Sport Witness believe that Everton were likely watching Nuno Tavares, an exciting young left-back who has broken into Benfica’s first-team this season.
With Leighton Baines in the twilight of his career and with Lucas Digne the only other senior left-back at the club, it would make sense that Everton would be eyeing up young replacements for the former England international.
The 19-year old has been forced out of position this season due to the presence of Alejandro Grimaldo in Bruno Lage’s side, but Tavares’ versatility as a full-back who can play on either side will be seen as a major asset to Silva and his scouting team.
However, it isn’t clear if this is who Everton were watching, with Benfica’s star studded squad contained a number of players who the Blues would likely be interested in signing.

If Sport Witness’ reports are to be believed, and there is no reason not to believe them, then Everton have been camped out in Portugal for quite some time now. All that time spent following a select few clubs and you’d assume Everton now have some very particular targets that they are monitoring.
Benfica are a great team with an academy famed for producing top talent, so there are plenty of positive outcomes from Everton’s scouting trips to Lisbon.
As I’ve said before, I have implicit trust in Marcel Brands’ judgement, at least until he can show me a reason not to trust him implicitly. Therefore, I’m all for Everton signing whoever they’re interested in at the Estadio da Luz.
