Everton linked with Delph – would he be a good signing?

Everton are reportedly keen to sign Fabian Delph from Manchester City, but would this be a smart signing from the club?

According to claims from The Times, the Toffees have expressed an interest in securing a surprise deal for the England international, who was a part of his team’s two Premier League title wins in the past couple of seasons.

Delph operated at left-back for City despite his natural position being in the centre of midfield, and he provided adequate cover in the absence of Benjamin Mendy.

However, as Everton continue to build for the future, would signing the 30-year-old be a good move?

Delph’s best displays, as previously alluded to, have come on the left-hand side of the defence in recent years. In this area, the Toffees are well stocked, with Lucas Digne starting his career at Goodison Park in outstanding fashion.

Marco Silva also has the experienced Leighton Baines at his disposal, and despite being in the twilight of his career, he is a more than adept deputy at left-back.

In the central midfield berths, too, Everton have options. Andre Gomes was recently signed permanently from Barcelona, and he will undoubtedly play a key role in the team next season.

Idrissa Gueye’s future at the club is uncertain, while Morgan Schneiderlin’s position in midfield has never truly been guaranteed. However, these players are defensively-minded – unlike Delph – and are suited to the 4-2-3-1 system that Silva often employs.

Signing the Manchester City man would seem a rather peculiar move. He would add valuable experience both domestically and continentally, but Everton are hardly short of players with pedigree.

This one may be worth avoiding for Marcel Brands and the recruitment team…

matchday.
