Everton player ratings v Newcastle: Hackney superb as Barry delivers

Everton are into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after an excellent 3-1 win over Newcastle United at the Hill Dickinson.

James Garner and Hayden Hackney put David Moyes’ side in control before the break, with Thierno Barry adding a third as Everton responded emphatically to successive Premier League defeats.

Everton player ratings

Jordan Pickford – 8
Called upon more as Newcastle pushed after the break and stood up well. His quick distribution also helped Everton break for the second goal.

Merlin Röhl – 7
Another solid night at right-back. Newcastle increasingly attacked his side after introducing Anthony Elanga, but Röhl stuck at it.

James Tarkowski – 8
Made a superb early intervention to deny William Osula and was typically combative thereafter. Led the defence through Newcastle’s strongest spell.

Jake O’Brien – 7
Strong for much of the contest alongside Tarkowski. Burn getting above him for the late goal was the one blemish.

Vitalii Mykolenko – 7
A welcome return after his Arsenal injury scare. Defended his flank diligently as Newcastle increased the pressure.

Hayden Hackney – 9
Excellent. Helped create Garner’s opener before arriving perfectly to score his first Everton goal. Booked and eventually withdrawn, but had already left his mark.

James Garner – 8
A beautifully controlled finish opened the scoring, and his ball-winning started the move for Everton’s third. An influential display.

Tyler Dibling – 6
Always willing to run at Newcastle and worked hard without quite finding the decisive final action.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – 8
Carried Everton forward on the counter and supplied Barry for the third. His energy gave Newcastle problems throughout.

Tyrique George – 7
His pressure helped create the opener, and he gave Everton some much-needed directness from the left.

Thierno Barry – 8
A goal, an assist and a much more complete centre-forward performance. His composed finish for the third capped a hugely encouraging night.
