Everton post horrendous new record after West Ham United loss

  • Everton conceded late once again after Callum Wilson’s 90th-minute winner.
  • Their defeat follows a Merseyside Derby defeat that also featured late drama.
  • Back-to-back losses have not helped the Toffees in their push for Europe.

Everton slumped to a successive Premier League loss after visiting the London Stadium.

Callum Wilson scored his ninth goal against the Toffees and ensured his side remained outside the relegation zone, with just four games to play.

The Toffees, on the other hand, slipped into the bottom half of the league table and will end the weekend in 11th place.

Wilson’s late winner followed Virgil van Dijk’s last-gasp goal in the first Merseyside Derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium, which means the Blues have recorded an unwanted stat for the first time in the club’s history…

Everton conceded back-to-back 90th-minute winners for first time in their history

Once the full time whistle was blown, Everton recorded two successive league games where they conceded a winning goal in stoppage time.

Surprisingly, this was the first time the Toffees have done this in their history, and the timing is not ideal.

Four games remain in the league season and to record a stat of this nature does not fuel the team with confidence.

With the Blues crumbling in the final minutes on back-to-back occasions, they will leave Evertonians with those extra nerves when the full time whistle approaches.

Unwanted mental block

If the Toffees find themselves holding out for a result in their next league encounter against Manchester City, their recent record in stoppage time will cloud their concentration in the final minutes.

This can be likened to the start of last season, when Everton went back-to-back league games, where they squandered a two-goal lead and went on to lose the match.

The fact that the Blues went two successive matches where they lost after holding convincing leads, stuck in the minds of supporters whose optimism would shift following a goal against their side.

Supporters will hope they do not find Everton in similar situations as compared to their past two matches, but if Moyes’ men are hanging on to match in stoppage time, Evertonians’ nerves could transition onto the pitch.

It is a fact now that the final four matches will be nervy for the Toffees, and they must demonstrate that they can hold firm in high pressure situations.
