Everton are scouting Fenerbahce’s Turkish international midfielder Mehmet Topal, says Turkish football pundit Mehmet Demirkol.
Speaking to the NTV Spor Servisi, Demirkol said:
I know Everton are scouting Mehmet Topal.
Topal’s contract with Fenerbahce expires at the end of the season, therefore he can start talking to other clubs in January.
The news of Everton’s interest, however, comes after another Turkish outlet, sports radio station Radyospor, reported that PSV had also been scouting Topal and are preparing an offer for the Fenerbahce midfielder.
The Toffees will, therefore, have competition in signing Topal, although Fenerbahce manager Vitor Pereira was said to have wanted to keep the midfielder amidst rumours of Tottenham’s interest in the summer transfer window.
Topal, 29, is a defensive minded midfielder who has also played for Galatasaray and Valencia, and has plenty of experience of Champions League football.
The Turkish international would add depth to Everton’s midfield with Muhamed Besic currently injured.
Topal has played 53 times for Turkey and is nicknamed ‘Spiderman’ due to his ability to use both feet.
