Everton star a surprise call-up for World Cup squad

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson will travel to Russia this summer having been named in Iceland’s squad for the World Cup.

The BBC writes that Sigurdsson makes the cut despite having been out injured since 10 March with a knee injury.

The 28-year-old joined the Toffees last summer from now relegated Swansea City in a deal worth £45 million.

Before suffering the injury Sigurdsson made 27 appearances this season in the Premier League, scoring four goals and providing three assists.

The midfielder is arguably Iceland’s best player and star attraction with 18 goals in 55 caps for his country.

For a country with a population of only 333,000, they have done remarkably well to reach the World Cup and famously knocked out England on the way to quarter-finals of the European Championships in 2016.

In that tournament, Sigurdsson scored in their second group game against Hungary and played every minute of every match.

He’s not the only Premier League player in the squad, as Burnely’s Johann Berg Gudmundsson also makes the cut.

matchday.
