Everton starlet Onyango promoted earlier than expected

Everton have fast-tracked the development of exciting midfielder Tyler Onyango, according to reports.

The 16-year old was expected to be promoted to train with David Unsworth’s Under-23s side in the New Year, but his performances for Everton’s Under-18s has seen him move up sooner than expected.

Onyango made his debut for Unsworth’s side against PSV in the Premier League International cup earlier this week, where the Blues drew 1-1 with the Dutch side.

Talking after the game, Unsworth was fell of praise for the midfielder, who was involved in Everton’s goal against PSV. As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Unsworth said of Onyango:

He was immense, wasn’t he?!

He’s been training with us for a couple of weeks now and he’s been performing like that in training. I’ve had to find a position and a role for him in the team because his training performances have warranted him being in the team.

He was someone who was always on our radar but someone we thought we would take after Christmas and into the New Year to come and train with us, but his performances have been that good for Paul [Tait] in the U18s that we had a look at him a couple of weeks ago and he started training with us.

There were a couple of times where I’ve looked at John [Ebbrell], and John has looked at me, and it’s been like ‘uffff’. There’s a lot to work with there and, basically, he’s played his way into the team and we’ve had to find a role for him in the team.

He was brilliant for an hour, he tired a little bit and he’s going to because the pace and tempo of his training, his stats have been through the roof.

He’s a boy with a big opportunity and, potentially, with a big future.

At this point in time, obviously it is hard to gauge Onyango’s talent unless you’ve seen him regularly on the training ground for Everton.

By all accounts he appears to be an energetic midfielder who is comfortable in possession, and has drawn attention from the England youth set-up.

Everton have had a raft of talent come through the academy only to not make it, but that doens’t make it any less exciting when the next player comes through to impress all who watch him.

Hopefully with Anthony Gordon close to moving up to the first-team, Onyango can also continue developing and moving up in the club’s standing.
