Everton are preparing themselves for a crucial summer transfer window, after they look to bounce back following a bitterly disappointing end to their 2025-26 campaign.
Players are starting to be linked with a move to Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Hayden Hackney being one target high on David Moyes’ shortlist.
Last summer was the Toffees’ first in multiple seasons, when they were allowed to spend heavily, and they will look to do so again.
But after going winless in their final seven league matches of the season, the Blues failed to secure European football, which could impact their summer spending plans.
Everton may look to sell in order to spend
Everton dearly paid the price for their financial mismanagement in recent years, most notably through their points deductions in the 2023-24 season.
So they will ensure that such problems do not arise again, and careful use of resources will be at the fore of any transfer business.
Ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer, The i Paper spoke to football finance expert, Rob Wilson, who expects that the Toffees will look to sell players, in order to cope with new SCR rules.
He said: “The headroom will be around £30-40m at a maximum.
“Because they’re not in Europe the value of the squad will reduce ever so slightly, which helps them.
“I would expect them to sell one or maybe even two of their assets and possibly do some trading on top of that.
“I’d expect them to do a net spend of £40-50m. It’s tight but not an insurmountable challenge for them.”
Another transitional summer for Everton
The fact that Everton must sell in order to buy, is a hindrance to spending plans, but based on their end to the most recent season, there are several players that no longer have futures at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Squad members such as Nathan Patterson and Dwight McNeil appear surplus to requirements, and while a large sum cannot be made on them, they are still players that can create more headroom for spending in the summer.
However, another factor that must be considered is the status of Everton’s star players, most notably Iliman Ndiaye.
If the Toffees are to bring about widespread changes, they may considered cashing on one of their best players, and use the profit to reinvest into their squad.
There are a vast amount of elements to the upcoming transfer window, and Moyes will be left a variety of decisions about his targets, as well as the futures of his current players.
