Fans slam repetitive comments from Holgate before Wednesday tie

Mason Holgate has labelled tonight’s Carabao Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday at a “big chance” for the Toffees to reignite their season.

Despite starting the new campaign in relatively solid fashion, the Blues have been disappointing in their previous few fixtures, losing to Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Everton will now face Wednesday at Hillsborough this evening after beating Lincoln City in the previous round, and Holgate (who played against the Imps) wants to grasp the opportunity with both hands, not just for Everton’s sake but also to stake his own claim as worthy of a starting spot.

Talking to Everton’s official website, Holgate said of this evening’s fixture:

It is a massive game against Sheffield Wednesday, we need to switch it [our form] and return to winning ways.

It is a big chance in a cup we want to do well in.

You could tell at Lincoln [how much the Club wants to progress in the competition] from the way the fans were – and from the team the gaffer picked.

It was a really strong team, which was a sign of how well we want to do. It is important for everybody.

It is always a great atmosphere when we play away, our tickets are sold out which shows everyone is behind us and wanting us to have success in the cups.

Meanwhile, a number of Everton fans were experiencing a sense of deja vu reading Holgate’s comments. Seamus Coleman has been trotted out to give inspirational comments after Everton’s last two poor results, and so Holgate’s interview was met with some cynicism.
