Folarin Balogun has admitted a future Premier League move remains an option after his proposed £40m transfer to Everton collapsed on deadline day.
The Monaco striker came remarkably close to joining David Moyes’ side during the summer window. According to talkSPORT, the proposed deal ran into complications following his medical, with negotiations continuing before the transfer ultimately fell through.
Balogun has now spoken publicly about his future and made it clear that returning to England hasn’t been ruled out.
Balogun leaves Premier League door open
Speaking to talkSPORT, Balogun was asked whether playing in the Premier League remained something he would consider.
“Yes, potentially,” he said.
“Football has many twists and turns as we’ve seen after the World Cup.
“I was close to a transfer, didn’t materialise, but for sure it’s definitely an option.”
Balogun didn’t specifically suggest that Everton could revive their interest, so his comments shouldn’t be read as an indication that another move to Merseyside is being discussed. They are still notable given how close the 25-year-old came to becoming an Everton player.
TalkSPORT reports that the two clubs had initially been working on a deal worth around £40m. The outlet says issues arising from Balogun’s medical prompted further negotiations over revised terms, but the transfer eventually collapsed despite a deal sheet having been submitted.
Monaco managing director Thiago Scuro later said Balogun had decided against completing the move after becoming unhappy with how the situation surrounding his medical had been handled.
Balogun has since returned to action for Monaco, but his latest comments show that the possibility of playing in England hasn’t disappeared with that failed deadline-day move.
Whether Everton would ever consider reopening the conversation is another matter entirely.
