Fonte’s move to Everton could be on the cards

According to an exclusive report from The Telegraph this evening, Everton’s move for Southampton captain Jose Fonte is a ‘possibility’ in January.

Everton’s interest in the veteran defender has been well documented since the summer and it now looks as though a bid could come in for the Portugal international next month.

The report claims that Southampton will welcome offers of around £13 million for their captain if potential suitors are desperate to make their move for the defender in the mid-season transfer window.

£13 million is certainly a hefty price to pay for a 33-year-old defender who has already shown signs of slightly declining in quality, but Ronald Koeman will be familiar with him from his two-year tenure on the south coast, in which he made Fonte the captain of Saints.

Fonte would be a solid addition to the Everton back-line but it’d certainly be a short-term move due to his age.
