Former Toffees striker says Sigurdsson not what club needed

Former Everton striker and current Sky Sports man Tony Cottee has hit out at Everton’s decision to buy Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City during the summer transfer window.

The Toffees shelled out £45 million for the attacking midfielder, who has so far scored one goal in 10 appearances for his new club in 2017-18.

Sigurdsson ended his three seasons with Swansea City with 30 goals in 112 appearances for the Welsh side, but Cottee says that the Toffees made a mistake bringing him to the club instead of an out-and-out striker (via TalkSPORT):

I’m not surprised they are struggling to a degree if you look at their transfer policy.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is a very good player but he wasn’t what they needed and £45million was a lot to pay for him.

Everton broke their transfer record for the second time in one window when they signed Sigurdsson from Everton, smashing the £30 million fee they paid Sunderland for Jordan Pickford.

Cottee continued:

They have ended up with lots of number tens. They have got Barkley to come back, they have got Rooney, they have got Sigurdsson, and they are not scoring goals.

It is no surprise that they haven’t got a goalscorer that Everton are in trouble.

Everton are currently 16th in the Premier League with eight points from eight games, just two points adrift of the relegation zone. They also face a tricky next few fixtures, so Ronald Koeman’s job could be in danger, as Cottee discusses:

They have got Arsenal at the weekend and they are going to be in trouble if they don’t start picking up results soon

Next up for the Toffees is a stern test in the shape of Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
