Goalkeeper spot must be strengthened further

Koeman is a man with a plan.

The 53-year-old has come into the club under totally different circumstances to Martinez’s entrance; a strong financial backing from Farhad Moshiri, an ambitious plan from the Iranian and a stadium move on the cards.

Although, changes have to be made if the club are to progress from two consecutive bottom half finishes, and these begin on the pitch.

After a horrible couple of seasons in the Premier League, it’s there for everyone to see – there are some real talents within the squad, but some are simply not good enough.

For me, the goalkeeper spot is the position with the most attention needed.

The goalkeeper spot has already been improved somewhat so far this summer, the arrival of Maarten Stekelenburg will add much-needed competition – although I wouldn’t expect him to be starting next season. With the arrival of Stekelenburg, formerly on loan under Koeman, coach Patrick Lodewijks has also joined, replacing Inaki Bergara who departed following Roberto Martinez’s sacking.

Stekelenburg, now 33-years-old, looks to be a good signing, even if he isn’t to be No.1. An experienced head and a player Koeman trusts, along with a minimal fee, it always seemed likely the transfer would happen.

The future of Spaniard Joel Robles is still up in the air, though. Primarily second in command to Tim Howard during his three years at Everton, he found himself as the favoured ‘keeper for the second half of last season – a long overdue decision made from Martinez.

Whilst, in my opinion, Robles performed well last season, the 26-year-old still has a lot of Evertonians undecided on his ability.

As they say: every good team has a good goalkeeper.

So, who could Koeman sign?
