Haaland hopes Gomes’ recovery makes him stronger

Former Norway defender Alf-Inge Haaland hopes that Andre Gomes has a successful recovery following the horrific injury he suffered against Tottenham.

The Portugal international suffered a fractured dislocation of his right ankle after being tackled by Heung-min Son when Everton faced Spurs at Goodison Park on Sunday, with the midfielder appearing to be in some anguish at the time.

The 26-year old was immediately rushed off to hospital where he had surgery on his foot, and he has now been discharged to continue his rehabilitation at USM Finch Farm.

Haaland is no stranger to horrific injury himself, having famously been on the receiving end of a rather vicious challenge from Roy Keane, an incident that would eventually cause the Norwegian defender to retire.

Talking to talkSPORT, Haaland sympathised with Gomes, though declaring that the midfielder has the potential to come back from it stronger than before. Haaland said:

I watched the game and felt so sorry for him because it was just awful, but it is a thing that can happen in football.

If it is a clean break it is maybe better, because it can heal quicker and you can come back normal again.

It was horrible. But it is a thing with football players. It is hard to play so many games, and accidents like that can happen.

No advice, but people have come back from injuries like that before, and maybe even stronger, so he will learn a lot from it. So, fingers crossed it is going to go well.

I think it is always good to look at the positive possibilities in situations like the one Gomes is currently in, so considering how the injury good make him stronger is a good thing.

Many players come back with a vengeance from injuries such as these, while others never recover their form, and it is much better to consider the former than the latter.

Ultimately it comes down to patience, effective coaching and a bit of luck, and hopefully it all comes together so that Gomes can come back even stronger.
